چکیده
We report on XMM-Newton observations of the “Black Widow pulsar”, PSR B1957+20. The pulsar’s X-ray emission is non-thermal and best modeled with a single powerlaw spectrum of photon index 2.03+0.51 −0.36. No coherent X-ray pulsations at the pulsar’s spin-period could be detected, though a strong binary-phase dependence of the X-ray flux is observed for the first time. The data suggest that the majority of the pulsar’s X-radiation is emitted from a small part of the binary orbit only. We identified this part as being near to where the radio eclipse takes place. This could mean that the X-rays from PSR B1957+20 are mostly due to intra-shock emission which is strongest when the pulsar wind interacts with the ablated material from the

We have conducted timing observations of the eclipsing millisecond binary pulsar PSR B1957+20, extending the span of data on this pulsar to more than five years. During this time the orbital period of the system has varied by roughly ∆Pb/Pb = 1.6 × 10, changing quadratically with time and displaying an orbital period second derivative P̈b = (1.43±0.08)×10 −18 s. The previous measurement of a lar...
متن کاملTwo Pulsar Wind Nebulae: Chandra/xmm-newton Imaging of Gev J1417−6100
We report on Chandra ACIS and XMM-Newton MOS/PN imaging observations of two pulsar wind nebulae (K3/PSR J1420−6048 and G313.3+0.1=‘the rabbit’) associated with the Galactic unidentified γ-ray source GeV J1417−6100. With the excellent ACIS imaging the very energetic pulsar PSR J1420−6048 is separated from its surrounding nebula. This nebula has surprisingly little compact structure, although a f...
متن کاملXMM - Newton spectral and timing observations of the millisecond pulsar PSR J 0218 + 4232
We present XMM-Newton MOS imaging and PN timing data of the millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232. We confirm the previously detected pulsations of PSR J0218+4232 and we show that the folded lightcurve is dependent on energy. We present the broad band (0.2-10.0 keV) spectrum of this millisecond pulsar, as well as the spectra of: the pulsed emission, the individual pulses, the interpulse and the non...
متن کاملXmm-newton Observation of the Double Pulsar System J0737–3039
We report on a 50 ksec XMM-Newton observation of the double pulsar system J0737–3039 performed on April 2004. We present results of the spectral analysis of these data combined with the much shorter Chandra pointing performed on January 2004. Black body emission with effective temperature of 0.20 −0.02 keV (90% confidence level) and emission radius 75 +30 −9 m for a distance of 0.5 kpc (implyin...
متن کاملChandra and Xmm-newton Observations of the Exceptional Pulsar Psr B0628-28
PSR B0628-28 is a radio pulsar which was first detected in the X-ray band by ROSAT and then later observed with Chandra and XMM-Newton. The Chandra observation yielded an X-ray luminosity two orders of magnitude higher than what is expected for spin-powered pulsars, also there were no pulsations detected. The XMM-Newton observation, however, reveals pulsations at the expected radio period, P = ...
